As we do each year, we honor our departed veterans by replacing the flags at their grave sites at Spring Brook Cemetery. This year, we placed over 600 flags. It was great to see the respect that our Scouts displayed.
A week later than the rest of the town, Troop 17 hit the streets to cleanup where the cleanup missed. We postponed our part in this town-wide service project, due to a camping trip. We cleaned up trash along West Street between Plymouth Street and Otis Street. Camp Norse was a beehive of activity at the start of May for the Emergency Preparedness weekend. The Scouts learned CPR, and also participated in a camp wide drill. The drill simulated a hurricane, and made a shambles of several Camp Norse structures. scouts had to work as a team to handle the emergency. This was truly a "be prepared" type of event. the weekend also saw the demolition of the old Camp Norse council fire ring, as part of the renovations to the amphitheater. Tulle Lodge did a masterful job at clearing the way. On September 20, 2014, Troop 17 held a flag retirement ceremony at Mansfield Municipal Airport. This was the first time that we were able to use Eagle Scout Tim Elofson's project, a fire ring, for its intended purpose. The Troop held a twilight ceremony, and retired over 650 flags. We are very proud of our Scouts, who put together and performed the ceremony with great respect for the flags that they were retiring. Should you have any flags to retire for next year's ceremony, please drop them off in the Scout room at the Orthodox Congregational Church. Troop 17 (and a Tiger Cub from Pack 13) helped out the Mansfield Relay for Life by cleaning up around the track and the camping area. We did a sweep around the High School, just for good measure. Thanks for giving up your Saturday morning, guys! You did a good thing!
The troop did their part to beautify Mansfield by participating in the Great American Cleanup of Mansfield. These SCouts gave up part of their Saturday to clean up rubbish on the side of Route 106. They cleared trash from Flint Farm all the way to the Eaton town line! Troop 17 had a (Super) fantastic Scouting year in 2013! We started with an Eagle, and ended with Trees. In between, there was the Klondike Derby, the snowy Baseball Hall of Fame, Howe's Caverns, Mt. Cardigan, NYLT, Treasure Valley, a Scavenger Hunt in Boston, Camp Wanocksett & Lovell's Island, Summer Camp at Hidden Valley, Camp Yawgoog, OA Ordeals, a once-every-four-years MassJam, a great Project COPE trip and several parades and service projects. Below is a quick recap. Enjoy! We had quite a touching flag retirement ceremony at the Mansfield Municipal Airport. Troop 17 did their best to clean up some areas of Mansfield during the Great Cleanup of Mansfield. |
